All monetary aggregates ended the week of April 2, 2020 on a positive note. The overall money supply, “M4”, soared by LBP 517.21 billion on a weekly basis, yet fell by 7.26% on an annual basis to LBP 206,590 billion, noting that the non-banking sector’s Treasury bills portfolio rose by LBP 102 billion during the concerned week.

In parallel, Lebanese-Pound denominated deposits and currency in circulation, “M1”, widened by LBP 709.79 billion week-on-week to LBP 20,916 billion on the back of some LBP 590 billion expansion in money in circulation, coupled with the LBP 120 billion rise in demand deposits. Local currency term deposits, “M2”, expanded by LBP 273 billion on a weekly basis yet plunged by 22.79% year-on-year to settle at LBP 58,634 billion.

Consequently, private sector term and saving deposits denominated in LBP (“M2-M1”) sank by LBP 436.79 billion (1.14%) to LBP 37,717 billion during the week of April 2, while deposits denominated in foreign currencies (“M3-M2”) increased by LBP 142.24 billion (0.10%) to reach LBP 136,344 billion.
