All monetary aggregates ended the week of June 4, 2020 on a positive note. The overall money supply, “M4”, rose by LBP 294.09 billion on a weekly basis, yet fell by 6.77% on an annual basis to LBP 206,387 billion, noting that the non-banking sector’s Treasury bills portfolio rose by LBP 10 billion during the concerned week.

In parallel, Lebanese-Pound denominated deposits and currency in circulation, “M1”, widened by LBP 538.82 billion week-on-week to LBP 24,999 billion on the back of some LBP 618 billion expansion in money in circulation, which outweighed the LBP 79 billion drop in demand deposits. Local currency term deposits, “M2” also expanded by LBP 134.62 billion on a weekly basis yet plunged by 21.40% year-on-year to settle at LBP 58,313 billion.

Consequently, private sector term and saving deposits denominated in LBP (“M2-M1”) sank by LBP 404.20 billion (1.20%) to LBP 33,315 billion during the week of June 4, while deposits denominated in foreign currencies (“M3-M2”) increased by LBP 149.26 billion (0.11%) to reach LBP 136,569 billion.
