The number of passengers travelling via the Beirut International Airport (BIA) contracted by 74.97% y-o-y to 1,557,273 during the first eight months of the current year, down from 6,222,002 passengers in the same period in 2019, on the back of the corona virus outbreak which caused some travel restrictions and preventive safety measures by some of the major and busiest international airports to prevent the spread of the virus. More specifically, the number of arriving travelers contracted by 76.69% y-o-y to 726,021 with the number of departing travelers also dropping by 73.85% to 803,573. Similarly, the number of transit travelers fell by 20.51% to 27,679, with the number of flights settling 65.48% lower on a yearly basis at 17,358. It is worth highlighting, in this context, that the share of Middle East Airlines (MEA) of total flights dropped from 37.08% in the first eight months of 2019 to 36.74% in the same period this year. تراجع عدد المسافرين عبر مطار بيروت بنسبة 74.97% سنويّاً خلال الأشهر الثمانية الأولى من العام 2020 إلى 1،557،273 مسافر مقارنةً مع 6،222،002 مسافر خلال الفترة ذاتها من العام السابق جرّاء تفشّي فيروس الكورونا الذي دفع السلطات العالميّة لوضع القيود على بعض الرحلات الجوّية وتسكير بعض المطارات وفرض تدابير سلامة وقائيّة لإحتواء الفيروس. في التفاصيل، إنخفض عدد الوافدين إلى لبنان بنسبة 76.69% على أساسٍ سنويٍّ إلى 726،021، تزامناً مع تراجع عدد المغادرين بنسبة 73.85% إلى 803،573 مسافر. في السياق عينه، إنكمش عدد العابرين (ترانزيت) عبر مطار بيروت الدولي بنسبة 20.51% على أساسٍ سنويّ إلى 27،679 مسافر لغاية شهر آب، كما وتقلّص عدد الرحلات الجويّة بنسبة 65.48% إلى 17،358. وقد تراجعت حصّة طيران الشرق الأوسط من إجمالي الرحلات من 37.08% مع نهاية شهر آب من العام 2019 إلى 36.74% في الفترة نفسها من العام 2020 ، كما هو مبيّن أدناه:
