Beirut Port freight activity expanded to around 462 thousand tons during the month of December 2020, up from 415 thousand tons in the previous month. On a cumulative basis, freight activity fell by 30.09% in 2020 to 4,561 thousand tons compared to 6,524 thousand tons in 2019. In addition, the number of vessels dropped by 21.13% to 1,377, with the number of imported cars plunging by 73.85% (36,554 cars) to 12,941 in the light of the USD liquidity shortage that is straining import activity. In a related context, the Beirut port handled containers with a total cargo capacity of around 772.873 thousand TEUs (including transshipments) in 2020 in comparison with a cargo capacity of some 1,229.081 thousand TEUs in 2019. Finally, Beirut port revenues fell by 44.37% in 2020 to $110.63 million.
