All monetary aggregates ended the week of May 27, 2021 on a positive note. The overall money supply, “M4”, soared by LBP 330.13 billion on a weekly basis and by 3.29% on an annual basis to LBP 213,769 billion, noting that the non-banking sector’s Treasury bills portfolio increased by LBP 200 billion during the concerned week.

In parallel, Lebanese-Pound denominated deposits and currency in circulation, “M1”, widened by LBP 239.26 million week-on-week to LBP 49,466 billion on the back of some LBP 411 billion expansion in demand deposits, which outweighed the LBP 172 billion contraction in currency in circulation. Local currency term deposits, “M2”, also expanded by LBP 121.52 billion on a weekly basis and by 26.62% year-on-year to settle at LBP 73,994 billion.

Consequently, private sector term and saving deposits denominated in LBP (“M2-M1”) receded by LBP 117.74 billion (0.48%) to LBP 24,528 billion during the week of May 27, while deposits denominated in foreign currencies (“M3-M2”) inched up by LBP 9.03 billion (0.01%) to LBP 127,881 billion.
