The World Bank’s regional vice president Mr. Ferid Belhaj recently commented, after meeting Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Mr. Najib Mikati, that Lebanon must implement a set of reforms if it is to access assistance to its ailing electricity sector. It is worth noting that Lebanon has previously inked deals with Jordan and Egypt to import some 700 megawatts of power that were supposed to benefit from World Bank financing conditional upon implementing certain reforms. In details, the reforms highlighted in Mr. Belhaj’s statement revolve around auditing Eléctricité du Liban, activating the regulatory authority, and improving collection.
