Expatistan, an international cost of living calculator, released its latest Cost of Living Index results dated July 7, 2019 in which it compared 319 cities across the globe based on their index scores when benchmarked to that of Prague (Prague being therefore the “central reference city” with a score of 100). The assessment of a city’s cost of living takes into account the prices of a basket of goods and services categorized under Food, Housing, Clothes, Transportation, Personal Care, and Entertainment. In this context, Grand Cayman – Cayman Islands emerged as the most expensive city in the world with a Cost of Living Index score of 263, followed by New York – United States (score: 243), Geneva – Switzerland (score: 240), Zurich – Switzerland (score: 239), and San Francisco, California – United States (score: 238), only to name a few. The world’s least expensive cities, on the other hand, were Rosario – Argentina (score: 54), Antalya – Turkey (score: 61), and Mendoza – Argentina (score: 63).
On a regional basis, Doha – Qatar turned out to be the Middle East’s most expensive city when compared to Prague with an index score of 192 (thus ranking 26th in the world), followed by Dubai – United Arab Emirates (score: 185; international rank: 31) and Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates (score: 174; international rank: 41).
As far as Lebanon is concerned, Beirut ranked 5th in the region and 108th in the world with a Cost of Living Index score of 149. In fact, Beirut was considered as the most expensive city in the world in the cost of one month of utilities (heating, electricity, gas...) for one person in a 45 m2 (480 Sqft) studio, the 3rd most expensive city in terms of one month of gym membership in business district, the 4th most expensive city when purchasing one pair of men’s leather business shoes, and the 5th most expensive city in the price of a cappuccino in an expat area of the city. Beirut also came in as the most expensive city in the Middle East in terms of the cost of one minute of prepaid mobile service (no discounts or plans).
نَشَرَ موقع إكسباتستان (Expatistan) نتائج مؤشِّر كلفة المعيشة لدى 319 مدينة حول العالم كما في تاريخ 7 تمّوز 2019، علماً أنّ هذا المؤشِّر يُحتسَب على أساس مقارنة كلفة المعيشة في كلّ مدينةٍ بكلفة المعيشة في مدينة براغ (والتي تُعتبَر بذلك المرجع الرئيسي مع نتيجة 100). ويتمّ تقييم كلفة المعيشة في مدينةٍ معيَّنة إستناداً إلى أسعار باقةٍ من المنتجات والخدمات المعلَّبة تحت خانة الأغذية، والسكن، والألبسة، والنقل، والعناية الشخصيّة، والترفيه. في هذا الإطار، أتت مدينة غراند كايمن – جزر كايمان كالمدينة الأغلى في العالم إذ بلغ مؤشِّر كلفة المعيشة لديها 263، تلتها مدينة نيويورك – الولايات المتّحدة الأميركيّة (النتيجة: 243)، جينيف – سويسرا (النتيجة: 240)، وزيوريخ – سويسرا (النتيجة: 239)، وسان فرانسيسكو، كاليفورنيا – الولايات المتّحدة الأميركيّة (النتيجة: 238)، للذكر لا الحصر. في المقابِل، صَنَّفَ المؤشِّر مدينة روزاريو – الأرجنتين كالمدينة الأقلّ غلاءً حول العالم مع تسجيلها نتيجة 54 في المؤشِّر المذكور، تلتها مدينة أنطاليا – تركيا (النتيجة: 61) ومندوزا – الأرجنتين (النتيجة: 63).
على صعيدٍ إقليميٍّ، إحتلّت مدينة الدوحة – قطر المرتبة الأولى في منطقة الشرق الأوسط والمركز 26 حول العالم في مؤشِّر كلفة المعيشة بنتيجة 192، تبعتها دبي – الإمارات العربيّة المتّحدة (النتيجة: 185؛ المركز العالمي: 31) وأبو ظبي – الإمارات العربيّة المتّحدة (النتيجة: 174؛ المركز العالمي: 41).
أمّا فيما يختصّ بلبنان، فقد جاءت العاصمة بيروت في المرتبة الخامسة إقليميّاً وفي المركز 108 عالميّاً في مؤشِّر كلفة المعيشة الصادر عن إكسباتستان، مسجِّلةً نتيجة 149 في المؤشِّر. وقد برزت العاصمة بيروت كأغلى مدينةٍ في العالم في كلفة "الخدمات (التدفئة، والكهرباء، والغاز...) لمدّة شهر لشخص واحد في استوديو مساحته 45 م2 (480 قدم مربَّع)"، وكثالث أغلى مدينةٍ لناحية "الإشتراك الشهري في نادٍ رياضيٍّ في المنطقة التجاريّة"، ورابع أغلى مدينةٍ فيما يختصّ بشراء "زوج واحد من الأحذية الجلديّة الرسميّة للرجال"، وخامس أغلى مدينةٍ في سعر "كابوتشينو في منطقة المغتربين في المدينة". كذلك أتت بيروت كأغلى مدينةٍ في الشرق الأوسط لجهة "تعرفة دقيقة المخابرة المدفوعة مسبقاً (دون الخصومات أو ما شابه) من خلال الهواتف النقّالة".
