Beirut Port freight activity contracted to around 374 thousand tons during the month of June 2020, down from 397 thousand tons in the previous month. On a cumulative basis, freight activity fell by 36.04% y-o-y to 2,245 thousand tons in the first half of 2020, from 3,511 thousand tons during that same period last year. In addition, the number of vessels dropped by 14.40% to 737, with the number of imported cars plunging by 72.66% (19,159 cars) to 7,209 in the light of the USD liquidity shortage that is straining import activity. In a related context, the Beirut port handled containers with a total cargo capacity of around 414.954 thousand TEUs (including transshipments) in comparison with a cargo capacity of some 620.932 thousand TEUs in H1-2019. Finally, Beirut port revenues fell by 44.26% on an annual basis to $56.92 million during the first half of the year 2020.
