The World Bank Group published its latest statistics on the cost of sending remittances from 48 source countries and in 105 receiving countries. The cost includes, among others, transaction fees, the applicable exchange rate, and the speed of the service. According to these statistics, the cost of sending $200 from the United States to Lebanon stood at $19.64 in the third quarter of 2020, representing 9.82% of the total amount transferred, compared to $19.22  (i.e. 9.61% of the transferred amount) a quarter earlier. This qualifies the USA-Lebanon corridor to be the second most expensive among all money corridors emanating from the United States. In a related note, the average cost of sending $500 from the United States to Lebanon contracted to $26.45 (5.29% of the transferred amount) in the third quarter of 2020, down from $26.55 (5.31% of the amount transferred) in the previous quarter. Furthermore, the World Bank statistics revealed that the cost of sending $200 from Canada increased to $20.41 (10.20%), while that of sending $200 from Australia dropped to $25.83 (12.92%) in Q3-2020. As far as European countries are concerned, the cost of sending $200 from Sweden to Lebanon fell to $20.08 (10.04% of the transferred amount), while that of sending $200 from France rose to $17.24 (8.62%) in Q3-2020, with the cost of sending $500 from the aforementioned countries narrowing in the case of Sweden to $34.16 and increasing for France to $37.16. The cost of sending $200 from Germany to Lebanon dropped to $22.25 (11.13% of the transferred amount) while that of sending $500 rose to $32.60 (6.52% of the transferred amount) respectively. It is worth noting that Lebanon emerged as the costliest destination for sending $200 from Germany. On a regional basis, the cost of sending $200 and $500 from Saudi Arabia to Lebanon increased to $11.63 (5.81% of the transferred amount) and $12.52 (2.50%) in the third quarter of 2020.
