The World Bank Group published its latest statistics on the cost of sending remittances from 48 source countries and in 105 receiving countries. The cost includes, among others, transaction fees, the applicable exchange rate, and the speed of the service. According to these statistics, the cost of sending $200 from the United States to Lebanon stood at $18.71 in the fourth quarter of 2020, representing 9.36% of the total amount transferred, compared to $19.64 (i.e. 9.82% of the transferred amount) a quarter earlier. This qualifies the USA-Lebanon corridor to be the third most expensive among all money corridors emanating from the United States. In a related note, the average cost of sending $500 from the United States to Lebanon contracted to $22.33 (4.47% of the transferred amount) in the fourth quarter of 2020, down from $26.45 (5.29% of the transferred amount) in the previous quarter. Furthermore, the World Bank statistics revealed that the cost of sending $200 from Canada fell to $13.93 (6.96%), with that of sending $200 from Australia also dropping to $25.13 (12.56%) in Q4-2020. As far as European countries are concerned, the cost of sending $200 from Sweden to Lebanon fell to $18.46 (9.23% of the transferred amount), with that of sending $200 from France inching downwards to $17.07 (8.53%) in Q4-2020, and the cost of sending $500 from the aforementioned countries narrowing to $28.91 in the case of Sweden and to $37.02 in the case of France. The cost of sending $200 from Germany to Lebanon, however, increased to $23.18 (11.59% of the transferred amount) with that of sending $500 also rising to $34.60 (6.92% of the transferred amount) respectively. It is worth noting that Lebanon emerged as the second costliest destination for sending $200 from Germany. On a regional basis, the cost of sending $200 and $500 from Saudi Arabia to Lebanon increased to $12.10 (6.05% of the transferred amount) and $14.48 (2.90%) in the fourth quarter of 2020.
