The number of passengers travelling via the Beirut International Airport (BIA) contracted by 71.19% y-o-y to 2,501,975 during the year 2020, down from 8,683,719 passengers in 2019, on the back of the corona virus outbreak which caused some travel restrictions and preventive safety measures by some of the major and busiest international airports to prevent the spread of the virus. More specifically, the number of arriving travelers contracted by 72.62% y-o-y to 1,172,049 with the number of departing travelers also dropping by 70.86% to 1,268,200. On the other hand, the number of transit travelers rose by 18.25% to 61,726, with the number of flights settling 62.56% lower on a yearly basis at 27,062. It is worth highlighting, in this context, that the share of Middle East Airlines (MEA) of total flights dropped from 37.76% in 2019 to 36.54% in 2020. This is further sketched in the table below:
تراجع عدد المسافرين عبر مطار بيروت بنسبة 71.19% سنويّاً خلال العام 2020 إلى 2،501،975 مسافر مقارنةً مع 8،683،719 مسافر خلال الفترة ذاتها من العام 2019 جرّاء تفشّي فيروس الكورونا الذي دفع السلطات العالميّة لوضع القيود على بعض الرحلات الجوّية وتسكير بعض المطارات وفرض تدابير سلامة وقائيّة لإحتواء الفيروس. في التفاصيل، إنخفض عدد الوافدين إلى لبنان بنسبة 72.62% على أساسٍ سنويٍّ إلى 1،172،049 مسافر، تزامناً مع تراجع عدد المغادرين بنسبة 70.86% إلى 1،268،200 مسافر. من ناحية أخرى، زاد عدد العابرين (ترانزيت) عبر مطار بيروت الدولي بنسبة 18.25% على أساسٍ سنويّ إلى 61،726 مسافر خلال العام 2020، فيما تقلّص عدد الرحلات الجويّة بنسبة 62.56% إلى 27،062. وقد تراجعت حصّة طيران الشرق الأوسط من إجمالي الرحلات من 37.76% خلال العام 2019 إلى 36.54% في العام 2020 ، كما هو مبيّن أدناه:
