The number of passengers travelling via the Beirut International Airport (BIA) contracted markedly to 549,576 during the first quarter of 2021, down from 1,165,094 passengers during the same period in 2020. This comes on the back of the corona virus outbreak which caused some travel restrictions and preventive safety measures by some of the major and busiest international airports to prevent the spread of the virus, not to mention the lockdown that was imposed by the Lebanese government since January 14 and until the 8th of February. More specifically, the number of arriving travelers contracted by 56.02% y-o-y to 235,548 with the number of departing travelers also dropping by 51.12% to 301,332. Similarly, the number of transit travelers fell by 2.26% to 12,696 up to March, with the number of flights settling 39.92% lower on a yearly basis at 6,492. It is worth highlighting in this context that the share of Middle East Airlines (MEA) of total flights dropped from 45.91% during the first quarter of 2020 to 34.97% in the same quarter this year. تراجع عدد المسافرين عبر مطار بيروت بشكلٍ ملحوظ إلى 549،576 مسافر خلال الفصل الأوّل من العام 2021 مقارنةً مع 1،165،094 مسافر خلال الفترة نفسها من العام 2020 جرّاء تفشّي فيروس الكورونا الذي دفع السلطات العالميّة لوضع القيود على بعض الرحلات الجوّية وتسكير بعض المطارات وفرض تدابير سلامة وقائيّة لإحتواء الفيروس كما والحجر الكامل الذي فرضته الحكومة اللبنانيّة منذ 14 كانون الثاني من العام الحالي ولغاية 8 شباط. في التفاصيل، إنخفض عدد الوافدين إلى لبنان بنسبة 56.02% على أساسٍ سنويٍّ إلى 235،548 مسافر، تزامناً مع تراجع عدد المغادرين بنسبة 51.12% إلى 301،332 مسافر. من ناحية أخرى، إنخفض عدد العابرين (ترانزيت) عبر مطار بيروت الدولي بنسبة 2.26% على أساسٍ سنويّ إلى 12،696 مسافر حتّى شهر آذار 2021، كما وتقلّص عدد الرحلات الجويّة بنسبة 39.92% إلى 6،492. وقد إنكمشت حصّة طيران الشرق الأوسط من إجمالي الرحلات من 45.91% خلال الفصل الأوّل من العام 2020 إلى 34.97% في الفترة نفسها من العام الحالي، كما هو مبيّن أدناه:
