The number of passengers travelling via the Beirut International Airport (BIA) contracted by 11.68% y-o-y to 1,052,191 during the first five months of 2021, down from 1,191,376 passengers during the same period in 2020. This comes on the back of the corona virus outbreak which caused some travel restrictions and preventive safety measures by some of the major and busiest international airports to prevent the spread of the virus, not to mention the lockdown that was imposed by the Lebanese government between January 14 and February 8. More specifically, the number of arriving travelers fell by 10.90% y-o-y to 496,275 with the number of departing travelers also dropping by 13.67% to 536,099. Conversely, the number of transit travelers soared by 47.68% to 19,817 up to May, with the number of flights settling 2.72% lower on a yearly basis at 11,723. It is worth highlighting in this context that the share of Middle East Airlines (MEA) of total flights dropped from 41.25% during the first five months of 2020 to 33.41% in the same period this year. تراجع عدد المسافرين عبر مطار بيروت بنسبة سنويّة بلغت 11.68% خلال الأشهر الخمسة الأولى من العام 2021 إلى 1،052،191 مسافر مقارنةً مع 1،191،376 مسافر خلال الفترة نفسها من العام 2020 جرّاء تفشّي فيروس الكورونا الذي دفع السلطات العالميّة لوضع القيود على بعض الرحلات الجوّية وتسكير بعض المطارات وفرض تدابير سلامة وقائيّة لإحتواء الفيروس كما والحجر الكامل الذي فرضته الحكومة اللبنانيّة خلال الفترة الممتدّة بين 14 كانون الثاني و8 شباط. في التفاصيل، إنخفض عدد الوافدين إلى لبنان بنسبة 10.90% على أساسٍ سنويٍّ إلى 496،275 مسافر، تزامناً مع تراجع عدد المغادرين بنسبة 13.67% إلى 536،099 مسافر. من ناحية أخرى، إرتفع عدد العابرين (ترانزيت) عبر مطار بيروت الدولي بنسبة 47.68% على أساسٍ سنويّ إلى 19،817 مسافر حتّى شهر أيّار 2021، فيما تقلّص عدد الرحلات الجويّة بنسبة 2.72% إلى 11،723. وقد إنكمشت حصّة طيران الشرق الأوسط من إجمالي الرحلات من 41.25% خلال الأشهر الخمسة الأولى من العام 2020 إلى 33.41% في الفترة نفسها من العام الحالي، كما هو مبيّن أدناه:
