The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has recently announced that the US government will provide some $2.76 billion in funding to help with the global food crisis, of which $29.5 million will be reserved for Lebanon. Said funds will be directed towards the vulnerable population from rising food insecurity and will be allocated in the following manner: $15 million for humanitarian assistance and $14.5 million in the form of economic support funding. According to the announcement, the vulnerable population’s purchasing power continues to deteriorate amid the ongoing economic crisis in Lebanon and the rise in the prices of staple food & fuel. The crisis which was further aggravated by the Russian war on Ukraine has directly affected Lebanon’s wheat imports and global food markets. The USAID mentioned that the $15 million in humanitarian assistance will be delivered through the UN World Food Programme and will benefit some 300,000 vulnerable Lebanese with monthly household parcels in the coming months. It is worth noting in this respect that in the fiscal year 2022 alone, the USAID has provided around $125 million in humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, including around $119 million for food security. As for the $14.5 million in economic support funding, the USAID noted that it will be directed towards supporting vegetable & grain farmers by supplying them with seeds and the like with the purpose of maintaining local food production. Furthermore, the USAID will help small dairy farmers with fodder and veterinary services. In addition, it will provide technical assistance, training and grants to agro-processors to improve productivity and help in reducing the reliance on imports which, in turn, will promote growth in the processed food sector and increase the availability of affordable local food products.
