Beirut Port freight activity widened to around 457 thousand tons during the month of September 2022, up from 441 thousand tons in the previous month. Similarly on a cumulative basis, freight activity increased by 9.38% year-on-year to reach 3,843 thousand tons by end of September 2022, up from 3,514 thousand tons a year earlier. On the other hand, the number of vessels contracted by 0.90% y-o-y to 877 while the number of imported cars rose by 41.16% (7,348 cars) to 25,200 as people flocked to buying cars in anticipation of a potential adjustment in custom fees. In a related context, the Beirut port handled containers with a total cargo capacity of around 529.83 thousand TEUs (including transshipments) in comparison with a cargo capacity of some 477.70 thousand TEUs by end of September 2021.
