The number of passengers travelling via the Beirut International Airport (BIA) rose by 30.00% y-o-y in the first two months of 2023 to 898,643, up from 691,279 passengers by end of February 2022. This rebound in the number of passengers was in part assisted by the historic depreciation of the Lebanese pound against the Dollar which makes Lebanon an attractive destination for tourists and for the Lebanese diaspora. More specifically, the number of arriving travelers rose by 30.86% y-o-y to 409,845 and the number of departing travelers increased by 30.13% to 487,010 while the number of transit travelers fell by 53.21% to 1,788. Concurrently, the number of flights saw a sharp rebound (21.74% on a yearly basis) to 8,209. It is worth highlighting in this context that the share of Middle East Airlines (MEA) of total flights rose from 37.46% during the first two months of 2022 to 44.82% by end of February 2023.
