Freight activity via the Port of Tripoli fell to 256 thousand tons in the month of March 2023, down from around 311 thousand tons a month earlier. Imported freight accounted for 35.22% of total freight (90.439 thousand tons), while export activity constituted 64.78% (166.346 thousand tons). On a cumulative basis, Tripoli Port freight activity widened by 11.84% y-o-y to 833 thousand tons in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 745 thousand tons in the same period last year. On the other hand, the number of vessels decreased by 18.64% on a yearly basis to 179 by March, with the number of imported cars dropping by 70.32% to 338. On the other hand, port-related revenues (excluding VAT and customs) soared by more than five-fold y-o-y to LBP 187,607 billion during the first quarter of the current year, from LBP 33,193 billion in the same period a year earlier. Said increase in revenues may be attributed to a hike in the applicable exchange rate on customs duties to LBP 45,000 per USD instead of LBP 1,507.5 per USD previously.
