The index is calculated using the values of eight other sub-indices which shape the quality of life in a city, namely the Purchasing Power Index, the Safety Index, the Healthcare Index, the Cost of Living Index, the Property Price to Income Ratio (which reflects the affordability of housing), the Traffic Commute Time Index, the Pollution Index, and the Climate Index. Ideally, a city should have a higher score in the Purchasing Power Index, Safety Index, Healthcare Index, and Climate Index, versus a lower score in each of the Pollution Index, House Price to Income Ratio, Cost of Living Index, and Traffic Commute Time Index to enjoy a better quality of life index score. According to Numbeo.com, The Hague in the Netherlands appeared to offer its citizens the best quality of life in the world scoring 215.7 in the Quality of Life Index, followed by Rotterdam (score of 202.5) and Luxembourg (score of 200.5) only to name a few.
Regionally, Muscat enjoyed the highest quality of life across the Arab World with an index score of 176.8 (global rank: 17), trailed very closely by Abu Dhabi (index score: 173.0; global rank: 25), and Dubai (index score: 172.7; global rank: 26).
On the local front, Beirut ranked 191st among 195 cities in the world and last among covered Arab cities in Numbeo’s mid-2023 Quality of Life Index, with a score of 59.40. محليّاً، أتت العاصمة بيروت في المرتبة 191 ضمن 195 مدينة في العالم والأخيرة ضمن المدن العربيّة المشمولة في مؤشّر نوعيّة الحياة لمنتصف العام 2023 الصادر عن موقع نامبيو بنتيجة 59.40. يُظهِر الجدول التالي أداء مدينة بيروت في الركائز الثمانية لمؤشّر نوعيّة الحياة خلال الفترة الممتدّة بين منتصف العام 2021 ومنتصف العام 2023. وفيما سجّلت أغلب المؤشّرات تغيّرات سنويّة طفيفة (أكانت صعوداً أو نزولاً)، سجلّ معدّل سعر الشقّة كنسبة من الدخل تدهور كبير وذلك على إثر التراجع الجنوني في سعر صرف العاملة المحليّة، في حين أنّ مؤشّر كلفة المعيشة قد شهر تحسّناً بارزاً.
