The UN-Habitat, with the support of the Lebanese Minister of Environment Dr. Nasser Yassin and in the presence of the German Ambassador to Lebanon Mr. Andreas Kindl, among others, issued a press release on July 7, 2023 in which it announced the launch of the “Reducing Marine Litter in the Mediterranean through Waste Wise Cities Lebanon” project (or ReMaL) which will last for three years. The ReMaL project was funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety with a budget of €4,574,096. The project aims to improve municipal solid waste management and resource efficiency in coastal Lebanon in order to lessen marine litter in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The press release stated that the launch of the ReMaL project places Lebanon’s environment on a recovery path and is consistent with the Lebanese Ministry of Environment’s vision to protect and preserve the country’s natural environment. In addition, the press release noted that the Ministry of Environment will collaborate with UN-Habitat on the ReMaL project to involve municipal authorities and local communities to prepare plans to reduce marine litter and manage the waste in an integrated fashion. Furthermore, the project will work along several interventions namely data collection on waste and launch a National Online Waste Observatory, the development of integrated solid waste management plans, and the implementation of pilot projects to ameliorate waste management and thwart marine litter. Similarly, the press release commented that an awareness campaign will be unveiled as part of the project and will cover waste management and the prevention of marine litter. Finally, the press release noted that UN-Habitat and its partners will work with 13 unions of municipalities & communities during the entirety of the project to guarantee that the project’s planned interventions are targeted.
