Freight activity via the Port of Tripoli fell to 279 thousand tons in the month of July 2023, down from around 285 thousand tons a month earlier. Imported freight accounted for 55.91% of total freight (156 thousand tons), while export activity constituted 44.09% (123 thousand tons). On a cumulative basis, however, Tripoli Port freight activity widened by 12.43% y-o-y to 2,148 thousand tons in the first seven months of 2023 compared to 1,911 thousand tons in the same period last year. On the other hand, the number of vessels decreased by 9.18% on a yearly basis to 475 by July, with the number of imported cars dropping by 63.81% to 1,229. On the other hand, port-related revenues (excluding VAT and customs) soared by more than two folds y-o-y to $16.69 million during the first seven months of the current year, from $6.27 million in the same period a year earlier. Said increase in revenues may be attributed to a hike in the applicable exchange rate on customs duties to LBP 86,000 per USD instead of LBP 1,507.5 per USD previously.
