Lebanon signed on December 29, 2025 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Egypt in which the latter supplies Lebanon with natural gas to power the Deir Ammar power plant. The agreement stipulates that this action aims to increase electricity generation capacity for Lebanese citizens. The MOU was signed at the Lebanese government’s headquarters (in the presence of Lebanese Prime Minister Judge Nawaf Salaf) by the Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water Mr. Joe Sadi and the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Mr. Karim Badawi. Mr. Badawi stated that Egypt would provide complete support to Lebanon’s gas sector by transferring expertise in the fields of exploration, transport, and distribution of gas to power plants, industrial sectors, and homes. Mr. Joe Sadi commented that following the signing of the MOU, Lebanon’s energy sector will progressively shift its reliance on fuel towards natural gas. Said decision was taken since gas is cheaper and is less harmful to the environment, noting that this saves Lebanon the hassle of the difficult process of entering into fuel tenders. Furthermore, Mr. Sadi revealed that Lebanon received a Jordanian study pertaining to the establishment of a gas pipeline connecting Jordan, Syria and Lebanon through the Deir Ammar power plant, adding that the pipeline is not costly and can be implemented within a period of 3 and 4 months.
