The Lebanese financial sector’s net foreign assets narrowed by $6,038.9 million in March 2026, in comparison with increases of $1,960.8 million in February 2026, $5,744.7 million in January, and $2,231.8 million in December 2025, only to name a few. The sizeable drop recorded in March may be explained by the dramatic drop in the prices of gold since the onset of the war that struck the Middle East region not to mention the contraction in tourism receipts, exports and remittance inflows. In fact, the net foreign assets of the Central Bank fell by $5,969.0 million in March alone (monthly contraction of $5.63 billion in gold reserves coupled with the $0.34 billion drop in foreign reserve assets) and were accompanied by some $70.0 million drop in the net foreign assets of banks & financial institutions. On a cumulative basis, the financial sector’s net foreign assets increased by $1,666.5 million during the first quarter of the year 2026 in comparison with a significant appreciation of $5,368.4 million in the same quarter in 2025. This increase owes to some $1,391.1 million expansion in the net foreign assets of the Central Bank coupled with a $275.4 million increase in the net foreign assets of banks & financial institutions.
