The World Bank Group published its latest statistics on the cost of sending remittances from 48 source countries and in 105 receiving countries. The cost includes, among others, transaction fees, the applicable exchange rate, and the speed of the service. According to these statistics, the cost of sending $200 from the United States to Lebanon stood at $22.97 in the first quarter of 2019, representing 11.48% of the total amount transferred, compared to $21.12 (i.e. 10.56% of the transferred amount) a quarter earlier. This qualifies the USA-Lebanon corridor to be the most expensive among all money corridors emanating from the United States. In a related note, the average cost of sending $500 from the United States to Lebanon increased to $29.15 (5.83%) in the first quarter of 2019, up from $27.71 (5.54%) in the previous quarter. Concurrently, the World Bank statistics revealed that the cost of sending $200 from Canada to Lebanon narrowed to $19.17 (9.59% of the transferred amount) in Q1-2019, from $22.76 (11.38%) in Q4-2018, while that of sending $500 also dropped to $32.07 (6.41%). As far as European countries are concerned, the cost of sending $200 to Lebanon from each of France and the United Kingdom dropped to $14.50 (7.25%) and $23.06 (11.53%) on a respective basis, with the cost of sending $500 from those same countries plunging to $32.01 (6.40%) for France and $38.38 (7.68%) for the United Kingdom. The cost of sending $200 and $500 from Germany to Lebanon, moreover, shed to $22.50 (11.25%) and $34.21 (6.84%) respectively. It is worth noting that Lebanon emerged as the second costliest destination for sending $200 from Germany after China ($23.70). On a regional basis, the cost of sending $200 and $500 from Saudi Arabia to Lebanon remained flat at $9.46 (4.73% of the transferred amount) and $11.10 (2.22%) in the first quarter of 2019.
