The World Bank Group published its latest statistics on the cost of sending remittances from 48 source countries and in 105 receiving countries. The cost includes, among others, transaction fees, the applicable exchange rate, and the speed of the service. According to these statistics, the cost of sending $200 from the United States to Lebanon stood at $18.71 in the first quarter of 2021, representing 9.36% of the total amount transferred, unchanged from the previous quarter. This qualifies the USA-Lebanon corridor to be the second most expensive among all money corridors emanating from the United States. In a related note, the average cost of sending $500 from the United States to Lebanon also remained flat at $22.33 (4.47% of the transferred amount) in the first quarter of 2021. Furthermore, the World Bank statistics revealed that the cost of sending $200 from Canada rose to $16.91 (8.45%), while that of sending $200 from Australia dropped to $24.29 (12.14%) in Q1-2021. As far as European countries are concerned, the cost of sending $200 from Sweden to Lebanon increased to $19.40 (9.70% of the transferred amount), with that of sending $200 from France soaring to $19.50 (9.75%) in Q1-2021, and the cost of sending $500 from the aforementioned countries rising to $31.28 in the case of Sweden and to $43.98 in the case of France. The cost of sending $200 from Germany to Lebanon, however, decreased to $21.07 (10.53% of the transferred amount) while that of sending $500 rose to $41.57 (8.25% of the transferred amount). It is worth noting that Lebanon emerged as the second costliest destination for sending $200 from Germany. On a regional basis, the cost of sending $200 and $500 from Saudi Arabia to Lebanon fell to $11.07 (5.54% of the transferred amount) and $13.45 (2.69%) in the first quarter of 2021.
