The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has recently released a report titled “Lebanon: Children’s future on the line” in which it shed the light on the grim prospects of Lebanon’s children. In details, the report commented that Lebanon is facing a multitude of crisis namely the economic depression, the Covid-19 pandemic, the Beirut port explosion in addition to the presence of a high number of refugees (highest per capita level globally) on its soil. In addition, the report uncovered that poverty levels in Lebanon doubled from 28% in 2018 to 55% in 2020, with extreme poverty levels tripling to 8%. Children in Lebanon, as per the report, are the most affected by the panoply of crises, with many parents sending their children to work (children as young as 6), marrying off their young girls, in addition to skipping meals and incurring debt that they are not able to afford. In figures, the report uncovered that 80% of children are worse off than they were at the onset of the year 2020, with many aspects of their lives being affected like education, nutrition and mental health. In addition, the UNICEF revealed that in 30% of the families, at least 1 child skipped a meal or went hungry to bed in March 2021, and that 77% of households in Lebanon revealed that they did not have enough food. The report also highlighted that 9% of families sent a kid to work, with 15% stopping their children’s education and 60% buying food on credit. On the healthcare front, the UNICEF commented that around 30% of children did not receive the required primary healthcare and that medical consultations and immunizations dropped by 15% and 20% in 2020 on a respective basis. The UNICEF urged the Lebanese authorities to take all possible measures to protect children in Lebanon such as expanding social assistance, ensuring quality education for all children and securing financial access for primary health-care services. From its side, the UNICEF commented that it has been securing critical support to Lebanon’s children, including the WASH sanitization initiative that targets 70,000 Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian children. In addition, the UNICEF spent some $6.9 million on the repair and maintenance of water systems in Lebanon during Q1-2021. As far as the Beirut port explosion is concerned, the UNICEF report stated that it is assisting in the rehabilitation of the devastated Karantina hospital and that it implemented an emergency cash transfer program that reached 80,000 individuals in areas affected by the blast.
أصدرت منظمة اليونيسيف مؤخّراً تقريراً بعنوان "لبنان: مستقبل الأطفال على المحكّ" ألقت من خلاله الضوء على الآفاق الحالكة لأطفال لبنان. بالتفصيل، كشف التقرير بأنّ لبنان يواجه مجموعة من الأزمات كالإنهيار الإقتصادي ووباء كورونا وإنفجار مرفأ بيروت ووجود عدد كبير من اللاجئين على أرضه (النسبة الأعلى للفرد الواحد في العالم). بالإضافة إلى ذلك، كشف التقرير بأنّ مستويات الفقر في لبنان قد تضاعفت من 28% في العام 2018 إلى 55% في العام 2020 كما وتزايدت معدّلات الفقر المدقع إلى 8%. وبحسب التقرير فإنّ الأطفال في لبنان هم الأكثر تأثّراً بهذه الأزمات مع قيام العديد من الأهل بإرسال أولادهم للعمل (مع وجود أطفال يعملون بعمر الستّ سنوات) أو بتزويج بناتهم الصغار في العمر أو بتفويت وجبات أو تكبّد دين لا يمكنهم تحمّله. بالأرقام كشف التقرير بأنّ 80% من الأطفال هم بحالة أسوأ من تلك التي كانوا عليها مع مطلع العام 2020 أكان على صعيد التعليم أو التغذية أو الصحّة النفسيّة. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، أفاد النقرير انّه في حوالي 30% من الأسر في لبنان فقد فوّت طفل واحد على الأقلّ وجبة أو خلد إلى النوم جائعاً في شهر آذار 2021، وبأنّ 77% من الأسر قد كشفوا بأنّهم لا يمتلكون الطعام الكافي. كذلك كشف التقرير بأنّ 9% من العائلات قد أرسلوا أحد أولادهم إلى العمل بالإضافة إلى لجوء 15% من العائلات إلى إخراج أولادهم من المدارس وقيام 60% من العائلات بالإستدانة لشراء الطعام لعائلاتهم. على الصعيد الصحّي، علّقت اليونيسيف بأنّ حوالي ال30% من الأطفال لم يتلقّوا الخدمات الصحيّة الأساسيّة وبأنّ الإستشارات الطبيّة والتلقيحات قد تراجعت بنسبة 15% و20% بالتتالي في العام 2020. وقد ناشدت اليونيسيف السلطات اللبنانيّة أخذ كل الإجراءات الممكنة لحماية الأطفال في لبنان كتوسيع نطاق المساعدات الإجتماعيّة وتأمين التعليم والخدمات الصحيّة الوافية للأطفال. من جهّتها، علّقت اليونيسيف بأنّها واظبت على تأمين الدعم الحيوي لأطفال لبنان، ذاكرةً في هذا السياق مبادرة WASH للتعقيم التي تستهدف 70،000 طفل لبناني وسوري وفلسطيني. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، كشفت اليونيسيف بأنّها قد أنفقت 6.9 مليون د.أ. لتصليح وصيانة شبكات الماء في لبنان خلال الفصل لأوّل من العام 2021. أمّا فيما يختصّ بإنفجار مرفأ بيروت، فقد أفادت اليونيسيف بأنّها ساهمت في إعادة تأهيل مستشفى الكرنتينا وبأنّها نفّذت برنامج طارئ لتحويل الأموال إستفاد منه 80،000 شخص ساكنين في المناطق التي تأثّرت بالإنفجار.
