Beirut Port freight activity narrowed to around 349 thousand tons during the month of June 2021, down from 401 thousand tons in the previous month. On a cumulative basis however, freight activity improved by 7.40% y-o-y to 2,412 thousand tons during the first half of 2021, from 2,245 thousand tons during that same period last year. However, the number of vessels dropped by 16.69% y-o-y to 614, while the number of imported cars expanded by 57.46% annually (4,142 cars) to 11,351, yet said figure remains significantly pale in the light of the USD liquidity shortage that is straining import activity. In a related context, the Beirut port handled containers with a total cargo capacity of around 322.374 thousand TEUs (including transshipments) in comparison with a cargo capacity of some 414.954 thousand TEUs in the first half of 2020. Finally, Beirut port revenues fell by 11.63% on an annual basis to $50.30 million YTD June 2021.
