Times Higher Education (THE) recently released its “World University Rankings” for the year 2023 in which it ranks almost 1,500 universities in the world according to a set of weighted criteria, namely teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income (2.5%). Two British universities appeared on the top 5 list namely the University of Oxford which came in first in the world with a score of 96.4 and the University of Cambridge which came in 3rd (score: 94.8). Three American universities made it to the top 5 list with Harvard University ranking 2nd with a score of 95.2, Stanford University reserving the 3rd spot (score of 94.8), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology occupying the 5th place (score of 94.2).
On a regional level, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (Saudi Arabia) topped the university rankings for the year 2023 with an overall score of 51.2-54.3 and an international rank of 201-250, followed by Qatar University – Qatar (overall score: 51.2-54.3; international rank: 201-250), King Saud University – Saudi Arabia (overall score: 48.9-51.1; international rank: 251-300), University of Sharjah – United Arab Emirates (overall score: 48.9-51.1; international rank: 251-300) and United Arab Emirates University – United Arab Emirates (overall score: 48.9-51.1; international rank: 251-300).
Locally, only five universities made it to the THE list led by the American University of Beirut which ranked first with a score of 45.0-46.9 and an international rank of 351-400, followed by the Lebanese American University with a score of (39.3-42.0) and an international rank of (501-600), the Beirut Arab University with a score of (34.0-39.2) and an international rank of (601-800), the Lebanese University with a score of (24.4-29.7) and an international rank of (1,001-1,200), and Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth with a score of (18.4-24.3) and an international rank of (1,201-1,500). AUB outperformed its Lebanese peers in the Citations and Industry Income criterions, while LAU fared best in the International Outlook criterion. In addition, the Lebanese University outperformed its peers in the Teaching and Research criterions. It is worth mentioning that the THE has listed 2 other Lebanese universities (Arab Open University and Modern University for Business and Science) as “Reporters” without assigning them any scores in the 2023 THE list.
أصدرت مجلّة التايمز للتعليم العالي (THE) مؤخّراً تصنيفها للجامعات حول العالم للعام 2023 والتي تصنّف من خلاله حوالي 1،500 جامعة حسب مجموعة من المعايير المُثقّلة ألا وهي البيئة التعليميّة (30%)، الأبحاث (30%)، الإستشهادات العلميّة (30%)، النظرة العالميّة (7.5%) والدخل المالي (2.5%). وقد برزت جامعتين من المملكة المتّحدة ألا وهي جامعة أوكسفورد التي إحتلّت المرتبة الأولى في العالم بنتيجة 96.4 وجامعة كامبريدج (الثالثة عالميّاً بنتيجة 94.8). وقد برزت ثلاث جامعات أميركيّة ضمن أفضل خمس جامعات حول العالم بحيث إحتلّت جامعة هارفارد المركز الثاني (نتيجة 95.2) وجامعة ستانفورد المرتبة الثالثة (نتيجة 94.8) ومعهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا المركز الخامس (نتيجة 94.2).
أمّا على صعيدٍ إقليميٍّ، فقد تربّعت جامعة الملك فهد للبترول والمعادن في المملكة العربيّة السعوديّة عرش قائمة الجامعات العربيّة بنتيجة إجماليّة بلغت 51.2-54.3 لتحتلّ المرتبة 201-250 في العالم، تبعتها جامعة قطر (نتيجة إجماليّة: 51.2-54.3؛ تصنيف عالمي: 201-250) وجامعة الملك سعود في المملكة العربيّة السعوديّة (نتيجة إجماليّة: 48.9-51.1؛ تصنيف عالمي: 251-300) وجامعة الشارقة في الإمارات العربيّة المتّحدة (نتيجة إجماليّة: 48.9-51.1؛ تصنيف عالمي: 251-300) وجامعة الإمارات العربيّة المتّحدة (نتيجة إجماليّة: 48.9-51.1؛ تصنيف عالمي: 251-300).
محلّياً، برزت أسماء خمسة جامعات لبنانيّة ضمن قائمة مجلّة التايمز حيث تبوّأت الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت المركز الأوّل في لبنان (نتيجة 45.0-46.9 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 351-400) تبعتها الجامعة اللبنانيّة الأميركيّة (نتيجة 39.3-42.0 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 501-600) وجامعة بيروت العربيّة (نتيجة 34.0-39.2 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 601-800) والجامعة اللبنانيّة (نتيجة 24.4-29.7 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 1،001-1،200) وجامعة القدّيس يوسف في بيروت (نتيجة 18.4-24.3 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 1،201-1،500). وقد تفوّقت الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت على تظرائها في لبنان في ما يختصّ بمعيار الإستشهادات العلميّة والدخل المالي فيما أتت الجامعة اللبنانيّة الأميركيّة بنتيجة أفضل في معيار النظرة العالميّة. أمّا بالنسبة للجامعة اللبنانيّة، فقد سجّلت نتائج أفضل من نظرائها المحليّين في معياريّ البيئة التعليميّة والأبحاث. يجدر الإشارة إلى أنّ لائحة أفضل جامعات تضمّنت جامعتين لبنانيّتين أيضاً (الجامعة العربيّة المفتوحة والجامعة الحديئة للإدارة والعلوم) وصنّفتهما مجلّة تايمز كجامعات مراسلة (Reporters) وبالتالي لم تُعْطَى لها نتائج في لائحة العام 2023.
