Qatar Energy recently entered a consortium with France’s TotalEnergies and Italy’s ENI for the exploration of Block 9 in Lebanon’s waters, replacing as such Russia’s Novatech which was present in the initial consortium that was formed in 2017. This step comes nearly 3 months after Lebanon and Israel signed a U.S. mediated maritime border agreement. Qatar’s energy minister commented that entering the consortium could pave the way to future explorations in Lebanon. Under the new agreement, TotalEnergies and Eni will each control a share of 35% in the consortium, with the remaining 30% share to be detained by Qatar Energy. This step means that exploration in Block 9 could start as soon as November this year according to the Lebanese press.
إنضمّت قطر للطاقة إلى كونسورتيوم مع شركة توتال إنيرجيز الفرنسيّة وشركة إني الإيطاليّة لإستكشاف البلوك رقم 9 في المياه الإقليميّة اللبنانيّة لتحلّ بذلك مكان شركة نوفاتيك الروسيّة التي كانت موجودة في الكوسنورتيوم الأساسي الذي تمّ توقيعه في العام 2017. وتأتي هذه الخطوة ثلاثة أشهر بعد توقيع لبنان وإسرائيل لإتفاقيّة برعاية الولايات المتّحدة لترسيم حدودهما البحريّة. وقد علّق وزير الطاقة القطري بأنّ هذا التوقيع قد يستتبعه مشاركة قطريّة في إستكشافات لاحقة في لبنان. وبحسب الإتفاق الجديد، فإنّ كلّ من توتال إنيرجيز وإني ستمتلكان حصّة 35% في الكونسورتيوم فيما ستكون حصّة شركة قطر للطاقة 30%. وبحسب الصحافة اللبنانيّة، فإنّ إنجاز هذه الخطوة يعني أنّ إستكشاف البلوك رقم 9 قد يبدأ خلال شهر تشرين الثاني من هذا العام.
