The European Commission revealed in a press release on March 30, 2023 that the European Union (EU) has announced that it will allocate a €60 million humanitarian aid package to Lebanon to assist the most vulnerable individuals in the country. The funding comes at a time when Lebanon’s population is struggling from rising poverty levels, food insecurity, and disease outbreaks. The press release noted that around 4 million individuals (including some 2.2 million vulnerable Lebanese) require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. The humanitarian package will provide food assistance, cash support, education and health services to the people that need the most help. In this vein, this latest assistance brings the total EU assistance to Lebanon to circa €860 million. From another perspective, the press release mentioned that Lebanon has been submerged in a political & economic crisis which has resulted in poverty throughout all regions in the country, crumbling public services and rising community tensions, noting that the global food and fuel crisis has worsened the already gloomy situation. Finally, the press release stated that around 80% of the Lebanese are living below the poverty line and that 36% live below the extreme poverty line.
