The World Bank Group published its latest statistics on the cost of sending remittances from 48 source countries and in 105 receiving countries. The cost includes, among others, transaction fees, the applicable exchange rate, and the speed of the service. According to these statistics, the cost of sending $200 from the United States to Lebanon stood at $23.25 in the third quarter of 2023, representing 11.63% of the total amount transferred, compared to $21.94   (i.e. 10.97% of the transferred amount) a quarter earlier. This qualifies the USA-Lebanon corridor to be the second most expensive among all money corridors emanating from the United States. In a related note, the average cost of sending $500 from the United States to Lebanon rose to $28.66 (5.73% of the transferred amount) in the third quarter of 2023, up from $26.66 (5.33% of the amount transferred) in the previous quarter. Furthermore, the World Bank statistics revealed that the cost of sending $200 from Canada fell to $17.24 (8.62%), while that of sending $200 from Australia increased to $25.59 (12.79%). As far as European countries are concerned, the cost of sending $200 from Sweden to Lebanon decreased to $15.32 (7.66% of the transferred amount), while that of sending $200 from France and the United Kingdom rose to $21.91 (10.96%) and $14.46 (7.23%) respectively. Similarly, the cost of sending $500 from the aforementioned European countries attained $28.58 in the case of Sweden, $42.55 in the case of France and $28.24 as far as the UK is concerned. The cost of sending $200 from Germany to Lebanon fell to $12.56 (6.28% of the transferred amount) with that of sending $500 concurrently dropping to $24.97 (4.99% of the transferred amount). It is worth noting that Lebanon emerged as the eleventh most expensive destination for receiving $200 from Germany. On a regional basis, the cost of sending $200 from Saudi Arabia to Lebanon increased to $10.37 (5.19% of the transferred amount) in the third quarter of 2023, with that of sending $500 also rising to $16.73 (3.35%).
