The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) published its annual report titled "World Giving Index 2023" which aims at providing insight into the world's scope and nature of giving and accordingly ranks countries based on the generosity of their people. The CAF bases its estimation of the degree of giving on a criterion that takes into consideration three main aspects of giving activities, the first has to do with whether one responds positively to helping a stranger; the second tackles the aspect of donating money to a charity; while the third relates to whether one engages in volunteering activities and how much time is given to them. The methodology is characterized by simplicity: answers and responses to the above three questions are recorded and averaged for the 142 countries included in the survey. In this vein, Indonesia emerged as the most charitable country in the world in 2023 with a Giving Index score of 68%, followed by Ukraine (score: 62%), Kenya (score: 60%), Liberia (score: 58%), the United States of America (score: 58%) and Myanmar (score: 57%), only to name a few.

With respect to the Arab world, Kuwait outperformed its regional peers and ranked 7^th internationally, with a score of 57%, followed by the United Arab Emirates (score: 52%; global rank: 11^th), Libya (score: 44%; global rank: 44^th) and Iraq (score: 42%; global rank: 51^st).

On a local basis, Lebanon came in 135^th in the world in the 2023 Giving Index with a score of 23%, ranking second to last (11^th) amongst the 12 covered Arab countries, only trailed by Yemen (score: 18%; global rank: 140^th). More specifically, Lebanon scored 42% in the average help for a stranger parameter, 18% in the average money donation criteria and 10% in the average time given to volunteering activities.
