The Lebanese Ministry of Public Works and Transport, together with the Beirut Port Management and Investment, recently announced the launching of a plan to rebuild and rehabilitate the Beirut Port area. The plan was announced during a ceremony hosting Caretaker Prime Minister Mr. Najib Mikati with the participation of the French Ambassador Mr. Hervé Magro and in the presence of the Beirut port director Mr. Omar Itani among others. Mr. Itani mentioned that Beirut Port revenues reached circa $150 million in 2023 after having reached its bottom level in 2020 when revenues stood at around $9 million. The French Ambassador emphasized on the important role of the Beirut Port as a hub for Lebanon’s trade activity commenting that France has constantly been supporting the Beirut port since the August 2020 blast. The plan was prepared by two French engineering companies experienced with port infrastructure, namely Artelia and Egis on March 13, 2024. Their work will cover the entire port area with the exception of the container terminal and will cost between $50 million and $100 million. Said plan includes rebuilding docks damaged by the port explosion, reorganizing the port’s layout to streamline traffic and shifting the facility to solar power (with the assistance of Electricité de France).
