The tensions in the region and their repercussions on shipping activity insurance premiums continued to cast their toll on freight activity via the Port of Tripoli. In details, activity stood at 272 thousand tons in the penultimate month of the year, compared to a pre-crisis level of 326 thousand tons in September (17% drop) and to 319 thousand tons a year earlier (15% contraction) in November 2022. Imported freight accounted for 48.16% of total freight (131 thousand tons), while export activity constituted 51.84% (141 thousand tons). On a cumulative basis, Tripoli Port freight activity widened by 2.88% y-o-y to 3,286 thousand tons in the first eleven months of 2023 compared to 3,194 thousand tons in the same period in 2022. On the other hand, the number of vessels decreased by 7.03% on a yearly basis to 767 by November, with the number of imported cars dropping by 52.98% to 2,330. On the other hand, port-related revenues (excluding VAT and customs) soared by more than one fold y-o-y to $27.06 million during the first eleven months of 2023, from $13.47 million in the same period in 2022. Said increase in revenues may be attributed to a hike in the applicable exchange rate on customs duties to LBP 86,000 per USD.
