The World Bank Group published its latest statistics on the cost of sending remittances from 48 source countries and in 105 receiving countries. The cost includes, among others, transaction fees, the applicable exchange rate, and the speed of the service. According to these statistics, the cost of sending $200 from the United States to Lebanon stood at $27.67 in the fourth quarter of 2024, representing 13.83% of the total amount transferred, compared to $25.80 (12.90% of the transferred amount) a quarter earlier. This qualifies the USA-Lebanon corridor to be the most expensive among all money corridors emanating from the United States. In a related note, the average cost of sending $500 from the United States to Lebanon fell to $29.67 (5.93% of the transferred amount) on a quarterly basis, down from $31.23 (6.25%) in the previous quarter. Furthermore, the World Bank statistics revealed that the cost of sending $200 from Canada increased to $24.23 (12.11%), while that of sending $200 from Australia dropped to $20.76 (10.38%). As far as European countries are concerned, the cost of sending $200 from Sweden to Lebanon fell markedly to $13.63 (6.81% of the transferred amount), with that of sending $200 from France and the United Kingdom also dropping to $13.53 (6.76%) and $12.37 (6.19%) respectively. Similarly, the cost of sending $500 from the aforementioned European countries attained $19.58 in the case of Sweden, $29.23 in the case of France and $22.55 for the UK. The cost of sending $200 from Germany to Lebanon increased to $16.20 (8.10% of the transferred amount) in Q4-2024 with that of sending $500 from the same country concurrently rising to $33.30 (6.66% of the transferred amount). It is worth noting that Lebanon emerged as the sixth most expensive destination for receiving $200 from Germany in Q4-2024. On a regional basis, the cost of sending $200 from Saudi Arabia to Lebanon fell to $10.50 (5.25% of the transferred amount) in the fourth quarter of 2024, with that of sending $500 also dropping to $17.05 (3.41%).
