Imports of petroleum derivatives, a proxy of economic activity and one of the constituents of the coincident indicator, rose by 5.02% in June 2025 to 544,340 metric tons, compared to 518,306 metric tons a month earlier. On a cumulative basis, the imports of petroleum derivatives soared by 39.23% in the first half of 2025 to 3.33 million tons compared to 2.39 million tons in the same quarter in 2024. The five-year trend depicted by the chart below, however, shows a downward trajectory in the import of petroleum derivatives reflected by a negative compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.95% over the June 2020 – June 2025 period.
