The European Union (EU) issued a press release on January 9, 2026 in which it committed to strengthen its partnership with Lebanon. In details, EU President Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by the President of the European Council Mr. António Costa, met with Lebanon’s President Mr. Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Judge Nawaf Salam and hailed the decisive steps taken by Lebanon in order to stabilize the country’s security and economy while also reiterating the EU’s commitment to aid Lebanon’s democratic institutions, highlighting the importance of the upcoming parliamentary elections. The EU stated that it stands ready to discuss a “Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership” with Lebanon once conditions allow, noting that a renewed partnership would improve cooperation in areas of shared interest. President von der Leyen also restated the EU’s strong support for Lebanon’s sovereignty along with the EU’s support of key Lebanese security institutions, namely the Lebanese Armed Forces, the Internal Security Forces, and the General Security.
