Beirut Port freight activity contracted to around 288 thousand tons during the month of August 2020, down from 362 thousand tons in the previous month, in the aftermath of the devastating explosion of the Beirut port on the 4^th of August. On a cumulative basis, freight activity fell by 38.34% y-o-y to 2,895 thousand tons in the first eight months of 2020, from 4,695 thousand tons during that same period last year. In addition, the number of vessels dropped by 20.89% y-o-y to 928, with the number of imported cars plunging by 76.80% (27,911 cars) to 8,430 in the light of the USD liquidity shortage that is straining import activity. In a related context, the Beirut port handled containers with a total cargo capacity of around 524.166 thousand TEUs (including transshipments) up to August in comparison with a cargo capacity of some 859.933 thousand TEUs in the same period last year. Finally, Beirut port revenues fell by 45.73% on an annual basis to $74.08 million by August 2020.
