Times Higher Education (THE) recently released its “World University Rankings” for the year 2024 in which it ranks almost 1,500 universities in the world according to a set of weighted criteria, namely teaching (29.5%), research environment (29.0%), research quality (30.0%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income (4.0%). Two British universities came on both ends of the top 5 list namely the University of Oxford which came in first in the world with a score of 98.5 and the University of Cambridge which occupied the 5th place (score: 97.5). In between, came three American universities with Stanford University ranking 2nd with a score of 98.0, Massachusetts Institute of Technology reserving the 3rd spot (score of 97.9), and Harvard University occupying the 4th place (score of 97.8).
On a regional level, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (Saudi Arabia) along with the Abu Dhabi University (U.A.E) co-topped the university rankings for the year 2023 with an overall score of 55.9-58.6 and an international rank of 201-250, followed by Khalifa University (U.A.E.), King Abdulaziz University (Saudi Arabia) and Qatar University (Qatar) (overall score: 53.1-55.8; international rank: 251-300).
Locally, only five universities made it to the THE list co-led by the American University of Beirut, the Lebanese American University and the Beirut Arab University with a score of (41.9-45.3) and an international rank of (501-600). Then came the Lebanese University with a score of (32.7-36.9) and an international rank of (801-1,000), and Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth with a score of (22.8-28.2) and an international rank of (1,201-1,500). The Beirut Arab University fared best in three criterions namely international outlook, teaching, and research environment while the AUB outperformed its peers in the industry income criterion and LAU ranking first in terms of research quality. It is worth mentioning that the THE has listed 1 other Lebanese university (Modern University for Business and Science) as a “Reporter” without assigning it any score in the 2024 THE list.
أصدرت مجلّة التايمز للتعليم العالي (THE) مؤخّراً تصنيفها للجامعات حول العالم للعام 2024 والتي تصنّف من خلاله حوالي 1،500 جامعة حسب مجموعة من المعايير المُثقّلة ألا وهي البيئة التعليميّة (29.5%)، بيئة الأبحاث (29.0%)، نوعيّة الأبحاث (30.0%)، النظرة العالميّة (7.5%) والدخل المالي (4.0%). وقد برزت جامعتين من المملكة المتّحدة ألا وهي جامعة أوكسفورد التي إحتلّت المرتبة الأولى في العالم بنتيجة 98.5 وجامعة كامبريدج (الخامسة عالميّاً بنتيجة 97.5). وقد برزت ثلاث جامعات أميركيّة ضمن أفضل خمس جامعات حول العالم بحيث إحتلّت جامعة ستانفورد المركز الثاني (نتيجة 98.0) ومعهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا المرتبة الثالثة (نتيجة 97.9) وجامعة هارفارد المركز الرابع (نتيجة 97.8).
أمّا على صعيدٍ إقليميٍّ، فقد تربّعت كلّ من جامعة الملك فهد للبترول والمعادن في المملكة العربيّة السعوديّة وجامعة أبو ظبي على عرش قائمة الجامعات العربيّة بنتيجة إجماليّة بلغت 55.9-58.6 لتحتلّا المرتبة 201-250 في العالم، تبعتها جامعات خليفة وعبد العزيز وقطر (نتيجة إجماليّة: 53.1-55.8؛ تصنيف عالمي: 251-300).
محلّياً، برزت أسماء خمسة جامعات لبنانيّة ضمن قائمة مجلّة التايمز حيث تشاركت كلّ من الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت والجامعة اللبنانيّة الأميركيّة وجامعة بيروت العربيّة المركز الأوّل في لبنان (نتيجة 41.9-45.3 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 501-600) تلتهم الجامعة اللبنانيّة (نتيجة 32.7-36.9 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 801-1،000) وجامعة القدّيس يوسف في بيروت (نتيجة 22.8-28.2 ؛ تصنيف عالمي: 1،201-1،500). وقد سجّلت جامعة بيروت العربيّة أفضل نتيجة في ثلاثة معايير ألا وهي بيئة الأبحاث والبيئة التعليميّة والنظرة العالميّة فيما تفوّقت الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت على نظرائها في ما يختصّ بمعيار الدخل المالي وأتت الجامعة الأميركيّة اللبنانيّة في المرتبة الأولى في معيار نوعيّة الأبحاث. يجدر الإشارة إلى أنّ لائحة أفضل جامعات تضمّنت أيضاً جامعة لبنانيّة (الجامعة الحديئة للإدارة والعلوم) صنّفتها مجلّة تايمز كجامعة مراسلة (Reporter) وبالتالي لم تُعْطَى لها نتائج في لائحة العام 2024.
